Capacity Building

Bumi Sehat fundamentally believes in supporting the next generation of health care providers and teachers to ensure that traditional knowledge is not lost.  We provide educational grants to teachers, midwives and nurses so that young women from poor families who wish to serve their communities have access to the education that will make this possible.  For more information, please see Peaceful Midwifery Scholarships.

In addition, Bumi Sehat is sponsoring a few students from Bunut Sari, a small remote village in the hills west of Mt. Agung in Bali.  It's remote location has resulted in the underdevolpment of the village's infastructure.  There is only one school located in the village, however there are no permanent teachers.  Therefore, the majority of children drop out before they graduate from 6th grade due to inconsistent staffing. Instead, these students travel to major cities to sell goods and make money for their families, mostly farmers, due to economic difficulties.  With the support of Bumi Sehat, these students will continue school through university level to become teachers, under the condition that upon graduation they return to their home village to educate the youths of the village.  This will in turn provide children with better educations for a brighter future.

Continuing education is important to the Bumi Sehat team of midwives and traditional birth attendents. Workshops by clinical educators from around the world are held throughout the year to keep these practioners as well as midwifery students from local communities well informed on up to date practices and on the path of learning and discovery.  This allows for acknowledging, appreciation and acceptance on new perspectives and interpretations of birth practices.

As the number of Bumi Sehat patients is steadily increasing, there is new need for a larger clinic that will allow Bumi Sehat to serve more patients in our Bali community.  For this, Bumi Sehat is hoping to raise enough money to purchase land and build a larger, purpose-built, environmentally sustainable facility. For more information, please see the A Million Mothers project.

Bumi Sehat is a proud member of the Bali Water Birth Association and helped facilitate the first ground breaking water birth conference in June, 2009.  This brought together birth practitioners from all over Indonesia to discuss gentle birth practices.
